- LETTERS, Page 6Thailand's Drug War
-
- The Thai armed forces are disturbed by your article on the
- international drug trade (NATION, Aug. 28). Instead of an
- objective report, you tarnish the efforts made by Thailand's
- government to suppress drug trafficking. You take a swipe at
- the Royal Thai Army in claiming that army helicopters are
- sometimes used to transport heroin. If the army were given
- conclusive evidence of examples of this use, such as the type
- and the serial number of the helicopters, then it would
- investigate straightaway. The Thai armed forces will not
- tolerate such misconduct by its men. If TIME does not have such
- evidence, then it should not have published these charges. You
- should give credit to the armed forces' moves to combat the drug
- problem by giving aid to domestic and international antidrug
- agencies. These efforts have resulted in the seizure of sizable
- quantities of drugs on many occasions -- news that rarely makes
- the headlines in your magazine.
